MLD within decongestive lymphatic therapy

MLD is one part of decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT), also called complete decongestive therapy. DLT combines skin care, exercise, manual lymphatic drainage and compression. In the more intensive reduction phase this is done frequently, followed by a maintenance phase. MLD on its own is only one piece of that picture.

Who MLD therapy may suit

MLD may suit people managing lymphoedema, those with post-surgical swelling once cleared, and some people with fluid-related heaviness in a limb. It is always guided by assessment. It is not suitable as a general detox or weight-loss treatment, and we do not offer it as such.

Before you book a home visit

A quick WhatsApp chat helps us check that a home visit is safe and suitable. We usually ask:

  • 1Which area are you located in (home, hotel or private residence)?
  • 2Where is the pain, stiffness or swelling, and how long has it been going on?
  • 3Was there an injury, surgery or medical diagnosis?
  • 4Any numbness, weakness, swelling, infection or severe pain?
  • 5Is there room for a portable treatment bed, and can you lie comfortably?
  • 6Have you seen a doctor or physiotherapist for this?

Frequently asked questions

Is MLD evidence-based?

MLD is recognised as a component of standard lymphoedema care alongside compression, skin care and exercise. It is described as a way to help control symptoms, not as a cure. Your medical team can advise on its role for you.

Does MLD remove toxins or flush the body?

No. We avoid detox and toxin claims. MLD is a gentle technique to support the movement of lymph fluid, used for swelling-related conditions, not a body cleanse.

Should I book MLD or see a lymphoedema clinic?

If your lymphoedema is complex or new, a specialist lymphoedema service should guide your overall plan. We can provide home-visit MLD as part of that plan, in coordination with your medical team.
