After a Fracture Heals: Easing Stiffness With Care

After a bone has healed from a fracture, often following a period in a cast or brace, the surrounding area is commonly stiff, weak and lacking its full range of movement. Regaining function takes time and guided rehabilitation. Soft-tissue work can play a supportive role in this stage, but only once your doctor confirms the fracture has healed and that it is safe to proceed.

Why the area is stiff afterwards

Time spent immobilised in a cast or brace lets the joints stiffen and the muscles weaken and tighten from disuse. Once healed, the area often feels stiff and works less freely than before. This is normal and usually improves with a structured return to movement, strength and function, typically guided by a physiotherapist.

Recovery is led by your medical team

The timeline and what is safe depend entirely on the fracture, how it was treated and how it healed, so your doctor and physiotherapist lead the way. They confirm healing and guide the rehabilitation. Any hands-on work should fit within that plan and their clearance, never run ahead of it. We always ask about recent fractures before treating.

A gentle supportive role for massage

Once healing is confirmed and with clearance, gentle massage to the muscles around the area can ease the tightness and stiffness that built up during immobilisation, which may make the rehabilitation exercises more comfortable. It supports comfort and does not replace the strengthening and movement work that restores function. We keep it gentle and within whatever your medical team advises.

Key takeaways

  • Stiffness and weakness after a cast are normal
  • Recovery is led by your doctor and physiotherapist
  • Massage needs confirmed healing and clearance first
  • It supports comfort alongside strengthening and movement
